Neuromuscular Medicine Subspecialty
for diplomates in Neurology and Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology. The certification examination will be offered by the ABPN biennially (every two years). The first examination will be offered on September 8-12, 2008. Applications were made available online late fall 2007.

Sleep Medicine Subspecialty
The ABPN Training and Credential Requirements for Sleep Medicine.

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN), with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), and the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOTO), was authorized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), to offer an examination in Sleep Medicine. Representatives from all four Boards developed and set the standards for the new examination. Each participating/sponsoring board established admission criteria for their own diplomates. The ABIM has administrative responsibility for development of the examination that will be open to diplomates in psychiatry, neurology, neurology with special qualification in child neurology, internal medicine, pediatrics, or otolaryngology.

Canadian Reciprocity program extended to 2012. Physicians entering residency training in psychiatry or neurology (PGY-2) on or after July 1, 2001, or child neurology (PGY-3) on or after July 1, 2002, may apply to the ABPN for examination ONLY if they:
1. Complete their training in a Canadian program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
AND
2. Achieve certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
AND
3. Possess an unrestricted license to practice medicine in a Canadian province.

Neurology - Clinical Skills Evaluation during Residency Training
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) mandates that demonstration of clinical skills competency is a basic requirement in order to apply for certification in the specialties of neurology and neurology with special qualification in child neurology. Competency in these skills should be achieved during residency. At the time a resident is applying for admission to the ABPN certification examination, the Board will require written attestation from the training program directors that the resident/candidate has successfully completed five required clinical evaluations.
The ABPN anticipates that training program directors will be able to input data regarding clinical evaluations via a web-based tracking program by the first quarter of 2007. Residents will be able to view their data and track their progress in completing the evaluations. Please check here for the most up-to-date communication regarding this and other important Board information.
Two forms (NEX v.1 and NEX v.2) and an instructional guide for use in performing the Neurology Clinical Evaluation Exercise during residency are located on the Forms page on the ABPN web site.
Other forms may be approved for use by the ABPN. If you are interested in submitting a neurology training program evaluation form for approval, please email to questions@abpn.com, fax to 847-945-1146, or mail to the Board office.

Extension of Temporary Criteria for Certification in the Subspecialty of Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
In September 2003, the American Board of Medical Specialties extended the time period for the temporary criteria for certification in the subspecialty of neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) through the 2007 examination.

In addition to meeting licensure requirements, applicants must be certified in neurology with special qualification in child neurology and must meet one of the three sets of temporary requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of 24 months of formal training in NDD acceptable for subspecialization in NDD.
-OR-
  • Satisfactory completion of 12 months of formal training in NDD and 50% of practice time devoted to NDD for the previous 2 years.
-OR-
  • Fifty percent of practice time devoted to NDD for the previous five years

After the 2007 examination, candidates applying for examination must complete ACGME-accredited residency training in NDD.

Questions regarding credentials should be directed to the ABPN's Credentials Department at questions@abpn.com.

NDD APPLICANTS - SPECIAL NOTICE:
If you have Board certification in pediatrics only (rather than in neurology with special qualification in child neurology), you MUST apply for certification in NDD through the American Board of Pediatrics. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology CANNOT accept your application.
